About Us
Our history
Furniture Plus Ltd is the largest furniture re-use and recycling organisation in Fife. It was incorporated in Dysart in December 2001, and is a Registered Charity (SC032833) and a Company Limited by Guarantee (SC0225920). It was established with a remit to provide low cost, quality goods and furnishings to low income households in Fife, thereby alleviating furniture poverty; and to provide employment and training opportunities to strive to alleviate social exclusion. It operated with a small team from its 10,000sqft base and quickly became established as a major force for good in the ReUse sector in Fife.
Now in its tenth year, it has continued to grow and, on top of the recently expanded 20,000sqft warehouse in Dysart, incorporating showroom, warehousing, offices and new training/employability centre, it has a retail shop in Cowdenbeath (1,200sqft) and a larger retail warehouse in Inverkeithing (25,000sqft). Thanks to a generally self supporting set of accounts, some gratefully received funding, and the Community Jobs Scotland Scheme, Furniture Plus currently employs 32 full/part time staff and at present, utilises the services of 18 volunteers. There is also a steady stream of placements from the job centre, local social welfare providers and educational establishments every week. Using its 6 vans, it has undertaken around 8500 free collections in the last year, diverting a massive 850 tonnes from landfill. It was able to assist thousands of families through provision of low cost/discounted furniture and household items.
Furniture Plus's main aim is to combat poverty and social exclusion, especially homelessness, through its core business activity of re-using and recycling furniture. It is a self sustaining project, hence the need to charge for the items it passes on, but their underlying task is to help the people of Fife in whatever way possible. The re-using and recycling of furniture and white goods benefits local communities, both socially and environmentally, whilst generating core income to sustain the project for those in need of services in the future.
